Air Mattresses
An air mattress is simply an inflatable bed. Usually rubber, plastics and textile reinforced rubbers are used in the manufacture of air beds.
When deflated, these beds can be rolled into a small package that can be stored anywhere and it can be easily carried as well. Thus if you need something to sleep on for an overnight camping trip, get yourself an air bed and you would not regret it. These can be either inflated by the mouth or the much easier way of using an air pump. Some of the air bags have the self inflating mechanism. They fill up with air automatically to a certain air pressure when you have opened the valve.
These mattresses are also waterproof, which is a major plus point while considering outdoor bedding. Thus they make apt camping beds. Some come with a midrise which increases their comfort level. These are raised off the floor and give the feel of an ordinary bed. A portable duffle bag is available with the air beds for transportation.
One can use air mattresses for three purposes: for camping beds, as guest beds or for permanent use at home. The manufacturing of the specific types differs according to their uses. Usually there are very few problems that arise with air beds. Sometimes a leakage may develop due to a tear or a puncture. It can be fixed by using a patch and for that you need a patching kit. The patching is the easy patch-and-go deal as long as you can find out the rip or the leak.
Then there are the sleeping pads. These have an insulation layer of foam over the air chambers. When it comes to air beds that are to be permanently used at homes, vulcanized rubber is employed for their manufacture. It is then covered with a canvas of polyurethane and then shelled with a cloth cover. These beds look just like ordinary beds except for the hose or hoses attached to them. This is where the air is pumped into the mattresses. The size of these mattresses varies from the small mattresses used as floats in swimming pools to that of the king size mattress.
Some of the mattresses are two-chambered. Each chamber has it own hose and outlet so the individual can decide the air pressure for their side. The firmness of the mattress can be brought up and down by just pushing a button on the remote control that controls the opening and closing of the outlet valve. Some mattresses do not require pillows with them as they come with a hump on the side of the mattress which can be used as pillow.
They are considered dangerous for young infants as these small children might get trapped in the soft folds of the air mattress and may suffocate. Therefore, they should not be used for infants as they pose of a danger to them. Other than that, air beds are very safe. They are also very portable and can come in very handy. So keep at least one of them around.
